Do You Qualify For a Subsidy?

Subsidized coverage refers to health insurance that's available at reduced or no cost for those with incomes below certain levels. Examples include Medicaid, CHIP, and Marketplace insurance plans with premium tax credits often referred to as "Obamacare" or the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The Health Insurance Marketplace was created by the ACA to provide a platform for individuals and families to shop for and purchase health insurance plans. The premium tax credits available through the marketplace help make health insurance more affordable for eligible individuals and families. So, when people talk about "Obamacare," they may be referring to the Health Insurance Marketplace and the subsidies available through it.

For Affordable Care Act insurance plans, open enrollment runs from November 15th to January 15th.

You'll need to sign up by December 15th for coverage to start on January 1st. Whether you qualify for a subsidy depends on factors like:

  1. Income: If your income is low to moderate, you might qualify.

  2. Citizenship: You must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.

  3. No Other Coverage: You can't have other affordable insurance options available.

  4. Not in Jail: If you're incarcerated, you don't qualify.

  5. Sign Up Through Marketplace: You have to get your insurance through the official marketplace.

  6. Not Offered Affordable Insurance at Work.
